Key to starting Your Own Clothing firm
Starting your own inexpressive label clothing firm is not as difficult as you may think. I assure you that the founding members of Volcom, Paul Frank, Hurley and Von Dutch, are not mad geniuses of fashion. You can duplicate their rise to brand stardom in case, granted that you have the following:
1. A decent logo
2. Creative concepts and graphics – produce Talent
3. A unique, blank apparel supplier
4. A decent screen printer
5. A Line Sheet to show inherent buyers
6. Sales and promotional talent.
Which do you think is most important? Its obviously produce talent you say? Are you Joking? You must be joking. Have you stepped out of the house recently? Have you seen Von Dutch clothing? Crayon weilding Chimpanzes furnish great designs. Furthermore, I dream the monkeys are more sanitary, but I digress.
#6 is clearly the most prominent element. You can create an entire line of fashion forward, beautiful clothing but if you can’t pitch it – no one will ever see it (excluding your mom of course). So, unless you want a closet full of your fabulous designs, ask yourself the following two questions:
Can I sell?
In other words……can I hit the pavement with my line sheet and walk into every boutique clothing store I can find? Then will I harass the hell out of retail clothing store buyers so that they’ll try to squeeze 5 minutes of time in for me at Magic 06′ (Clothing Convention) ?
Will I be able to make a professional presentation to a Nordstroms buyer?
Can I promote?
Do I have and creative viral or gureilla marketing ideas to get this label kickstarted?
If the talk to both of these questions is No – you great get some help. Namely, find person passionate for fashion who also happens to be ridiculously outgoing, great on the phone and aggressive as hell. Lastly, (and superficially) it would help if your sales rep is hot.
I know, how horrible…..so sorry, buy I didn’t say anything about this being an equal chance blog
That being said, let me welcome you the shallow end of the pool….. I.e. The fashion world.
Good luck with your label!
Quintessential Soulmate Movie – Serendipity
Although now practically ten years old this movie – Serendipity – still strikes a chord in a soulmate’s heart. Basically, it’s a easy “love will conquer” type love story that you might expect to have been produced in the 1930′s with William Powell and Myrna Loy. The concentrate meets, both have indispensable others, and lose each other through a series of (certainly unbelievable) turns of fate. Movie segues to several years later, both are engaged and have not been in contact (I’ll clarify that later) since that one day opportunity meeting. Needless to say both conclude their engagements and find each other for the happy ending.
A little explaining is called for – they meet in Bloomingdales, in New York, at Christmas time while both are reaching for the last pair of black gloves. John Cusack, playing the man, does the gentlemanly thing and allows the lady, played by Kate Beckinsale, to buy the gloves. As repaymen she takes him for ice cream sundaes at a local restaurant – Serendipity and New York landmark still on East 60th Street. He pushes for her number, but she refuses, and gets in a cab to drive out of his life forever – never even telling him her name. However, now fate inserts its trickery into the mix. As he walks home he realizes he left a scarf in the restaurant and returns to retrieve it. As he lurches upstairs and approaches the table they shared, she is there, having forgotten her bag with the gloves. This fait accompli breaks her will, and they spend the afternoon ice skating in Central Park. Now as they get ready to part, he writes his name and phone on a five-dollar bill, gives it to her; she tries to give her data to him but a wind (more fate) blows the slip of paper from her hand. She then takes the five with his data and runs over the street and buys breath mints. She also takes a book and writes her data on the flyleaf. Now fate must bring the five back to her and the book is sold to a used book store and must find it the way to him. If either happens, they can contact each other as fate has willed it.
Her next test of fate is to run into the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Park Avenue. They both enter isolate elevators and punch a floor estimate (43 floors) – if they arrive together fate will be satisfied. As the doors close, she relents and yells her name – Sarah. They both hit the same floor – 23 – but his cab stops at other floor and a kid and his dad enter. The kid punches every floor on the panel. She has arrived and waits, but just as he arrives after stopping at 20 extra floors, she enters other cab goes down, and leaves. Neither now has any way to contact the other.
Fast send several years, both are engaged to other people; but both also have this constant pesky memory in their minds about that day years ago. As he is packing for his honeymoon the bag from Bloomingdales with her prestige card receipt pops up, and he decides to find her. Most of the middle of the movie unfolds their respective hunt for each other. She flies to New York where he still lives, and he flies to California where he has found she lives – after so many years of searching for her name and address, his fiancé has given him the elusive book as a wedding present. His fiancé only knew every time they went into a bookstore together he searched for that exact book, but never knowing why. Beckinsale resigns herself to leave for California but sitting on the plane waiting for takeoff, and having inadvertently switched wallets with her friend, she pays for her headphones with the exact five dollar bill. They find each other at the skating rink in Central Park and the movie closes with their celebration at Bloomingdales where they first met.
Sappy – yes, anticipated – certainly; but the best movie I have ever seen to overwhelm a soulmate’s heart.
As we hunt for our Soulmate, I believe our only regrets, or memories we keep, are for those things we didn’t do. I can still remember high school dances as the guys stood on the periphery of the gym telling each other their plans to ask this or that girl to dance. The majority of times the excuse was you didn’t like that song, or she was already dancing with so-and-so. My only recall is of going home – never having danced once. I still remember vividly the most beautiful girl I have ever encountered in my life at a friend’s party. She came with a guy, but I never even tried to find out whatever about her. I did find out later she had married, and divorced that guy; then fascinating to Hawaii. I could go on for hundreds of words; of course it would get me nowhere.
Soulmates are an elusive animal, few citizen encounter one. I have never met a person who has found more than one. All I can propose is jump at every chance, you might remember an embarrassment or a few turn downs; but I can warrant you’ll never forget that special one that you never even gave a chance. Watch the movie – I think it will inspire you.

Hello from Ottawa – Skating on the Rideau Canal – Officially the World’s Largest Skating Rink
There is no denying it: Ottawa is known is one of the coldest capitals in the world (only as far as temperatures are involved though). But does that mean you stay at home during the winter and mope? categorically not! Ottawa has turned a potential liability into a key asset and categorically shows us how to celebrate winter.
First there is Winterlude, Ottawa’s winter festival, which is being held this year from February 3 to 19, 2006. Winterlude is apparently attended by more than 650,000 winter revellers and encompasses a myriad of events: concerts, extra events, culinary demonstrations, cafeteria festivals and the list goes on. Skating on the Rideau Skateway, at approximately 8 km the world’s largest icerink., was our main think for advent to Ottawa. categorically we had travelled to Ottawa about 3 years ago and due to warm weather Winterlude was a total washout for us that year (I guess the suitable term for that event would be “Waterlude”).
But our earlier caress didn’t deter us, so this year Theresa and I decided to come back and pray for best weather so we would categorically be able to check out this extraordinary skating and entertainment venue for ourselves.
Incidentally, the Rideau Canal Skateway has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest plainly icy ice rink. The skateway is 7.8 kilometers long and takes you from the Rideau Bridge all the way to Dow’s Lake.
We got going early just colse to 10 am on an categorically excellent winter day, but even at that time, the skateway was packed, and the walkthrough over the icy ice from Confederation Park to the skateway entrance on the other side of the river was chock full with citizen in a long lineup.
We laced up our skates and put our boots in our backbacks which would give us the flexibility to get off the ice at any time and continue our explorations on foot. Or if we got too tired, we could even hop on the “Sno-Bus” which connects Dow’s Lake with Confederation Park during the entire Winterlude Festival for the low fee of .50 (more information on the Oc Transpo site) .
But, apparently we didn’t need a Sno-Bus, we skated our way down on this extraordinary natural ice face all the way to the lake and didn’t even need to rest. On this gorgeous day with crystal blue skies and excellent winter weather and amazingly no winds, skating on the Rideau was a extraordinary experience. We could categorically not have picked a best day to study the Rideau Canal on skates.
At separate intervals along the way there were a variety of rest areas, food concessions and extra entertainment or information areas. Well represented of course is a renowned Ottawa trademark: the Beavertails concession booths which sell freshly made warm pastry, sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. The excellent snack and energy source on a cold winter’s day.
At the Via Rail Concord hub Rest Area an exhibit shed light on Ottawa’s compel history. Apparently many years ago, trains would arrive in downtown Ottawa right next to the Rideau Canal. At Fifth Avenue, young sports fans were enjoying the Canadian Tire Jumpstart action Centre where they were jumping through the air on a trampoline ideas and putting their hockey skills to the test.
At Pig Island a extra area with teepees was set up to get a taste of Aboriginal traditions, culture and cuisine. In expanding the area featured a loggers’ exhibit, a snowshoe-making workshop and aboriginal songs and drumming.
Once arrived at Dow’s Lake I went on to study the 26th each year Bed Race, a fundraising event which proved to be an categorically hilarious experience, for a good cause no less. The Bed Race is organized by the Ottawa Kiwanis Club and the proceeds, close to ,000 will go towards the Children’s Read-A-Thon.
But I had more to cover, so I started skating back towards the downtown and by this time the skateway had filled up quite a bit. It seemed like young and old, the whole house was out. Parents were pulling their children on diminutive sleds, or even pushing them in all-terrain baby carriages. Everybody was having a ton of fun.
On the way back one person struck my attention: a young lady on red skates with red gloves and a red scarf was skating down the canal, juggling, apparently just having a ball of a time. I approached her to find out a bit about her. She introduced herself as Sylvie, and shared with me that she is part of a juggling house and that juggling is in her blood. She said that juggling is her life, and although she doesn’t drive the fanciest car, she is happy because she gets to do what she loves.
After all this skating I got categorically hungry, so I took off my skates and plainly headed up to the Rideau Centre, one of Ottawa’s biggest shopping centres. It is located right next to the Canal and was categorically packed on this day. The Rideau Centre offered a welcome opening to warm up and catch a nice lunch in its food court.
Obviously I love outdoor activities as well as urban exploring, and skating on the Rideau Canal through downtown Ottawa combines both activities perfectly. I got a brief taste of this extra winter activity, and one thing is for sure: I’ll be back!!!
